What Is The Pettibon System?
At Advanced Healthcare, we use one of the most researched and proven system for treating and correcting spinal and postural problems. This is an advanced system integrating aspects of chiropractic, physical therapy and neurology. It is a proven methodology for providing pain relief and restoring normal, optimal spinal function. Through a meticulous and comprehensive examination, a global and spinal strengthening program is designed and customized to each patient. This program ensures decreased pain and symptoms, improved strength and mobility, as well as a greater ability to prevent spine, disc, and nerve related problems.
What Makes This System Unique?
With this system, it is recognized that most problems have many factors, including: muscle weakness, muscle stiffness, ligament and tendon damage, structural misalignment and neurological stress. This system has specific rehabilitative procedures that address all of these factors.
Many people have muscles that are so tight and weak, that they have an inability to maintain stability in the spine and prevent injury and degeneration. These people will find temporary relief with periodic massage and adjustments, but the problem always seems to return. Year after year, their problem seems to continue to worsen. In this system, the muscles are properly stretched out and warmed up before continuing with other treatments. This not only provides pain relief and improved mobility, but also prepares the spine to receive more benefit from the corrective strengthening exercises.
Once the muscles are properly stretched and warmed up, rehabilitative procedures are focused on the spinal ligaments and spinal discs. The ligaments hold the spinal bones or vertebra together, and ensure that optimal range of motion and mobility are possible. Injury and dysfunction in the ligaments, will not only lead to pain and osteoarthritis, but will also make the joint more susceptible to injury. This system incorporates procedures to strengthen and repair these ligaments, so global posture and spine correction is possible.
After addressing the underlying muscular and ligament dysfunction, the chiropractic adjustment is performed. The chiropractic adjustment provides the following benefits:
- Improved range of motion and mobility
- Decreased pain
- Re-alignment of the spine
- Decrease of neurological stress and dysfunction
The chiropractic adjustment is performed by either instrument or manually with the hand. Many times a combination of both techniques are used, depending on the person and the individual need.
Following the adjustment, the spinal and postural muscles are strengthened with a variety of corrective exercises. There are two types of muscles: phasic and postural. Phasic muscles are muscles primarily used in movement. These muscles are typically strengthened through weight lifting or traditional physical therapy. Postural muscles are muscles that provide stability to the spine and associated joints. The postural muscular system is the primary system that needs to be corrected, in order for the spine and global posture to be corrected. These muscles are not under voluntary or conscious control, they are controlled by the brain in response to gravity and movement. These muscles are strengthened with isometric demand exercises which means your muscles are contracting against a force that moves only slightly or not at all.
The specific type of isometric demand exercises that this system uses is called the Pettibon Weighting System. In this system, specially designed weights are applied to the head and/or shoulder. Wearing the weights sends new postural information to the brain, altering the body position and improving the posture and alignment. Over time, the postural muscles strengthen to this new ideal position, correcting the underlying spinal problem.
To further stimulate brain and postural muscles to strengthen to the corrected position, patients stand on a whole body vibration plate. The Whole Body Vibration plate vibrates and oscillates very quickly, causing your muscles to reflexively contract multiple times per second. Each time your muscles contract they are getting stronger and more able to provide stability and proper function.
Following are some of the rehabilitative procedures discussed above:
Whole Body Vibration
Whole Body Vibration was developed in 1960’s by the Russians, to help prevent cosmonauts from experiencing bone and muscle loss while in space. They discovered that exercising on these vibrating plates produced multiple other benefits, including:
- Strengthening of Muscles
- Strengthening of Bones
- Improved Circulation
- Improved Metabolism and Increased Fat Burning
- Decreased Pain
- Improved Production of Serotonin “the happy hormone”
- Decreased Production of Cortisol “ the stress hormone”
Wobble Board Exercise
This exercise stretches and strengthens the muscles, tendon and ligaments of the lower back. It is specifically designed to optimally affect the interverbral disc. This exercise can actually help to regenerate degenerated and injured discs. It also helps to provide relief of back pain. This exercise, when used with the Pettibon Weighting System, helps in the correction of the global posture and spine.
Repetitive Cervical Traction Exercise
This exercise has multiple benefits, including:
- Stretching the muscles and ligaments of the neck and upper back.
- Helps to heal and repair degenerated and injured discs.
- Decreases pain, stiffness and soreness in the neck and upper back.
- Helps to restore the normal neck curvature and posture.
- Prepares the spine and postural muscles to be re-aligned by the chiropractic adjustment.
Proprioceptive Neurofacilitation (PNF) Stretching
This is a technique that allows a person to stretch further than previously possible.
Pettibon Tendon Ligament Muscle Stimulater (PTLMS)
Once the Corrective stages of care are complete, and a patient has maximized the improvements, a custom made home treatment plan is recommended. This home program will include exercises and stretches that will continue to provide pain relief, improved function and optimal health. With this comprehensive system of rehab to correct the spine and posture, Advanced Healthcare can ensure a high level or results. This system focuses on accurately determining the exact cause of the pain and dysfunction, designing and implementing a specific, tailor made treatment program, and most importantly providing the tools for patients to not only maintain the positive changes, but also continue to experience improvements in health.
