Though exercising is a healthy pursuit, it is not without risk, particularly for amateur athletes; the combination of poor training practices and inadequate experience and gear can result in a high rate of injury. Fortunately, many injuries can be treated through physical medicine practices, in order to get athletes back on their feet and back in the game.

  • For adult competitors, it’s important to know your limits. If you are hurt, continuing to play can further injure you, so stop immediately. Resting, and treating the afflicted area with rest, ice, compression, and elevation can relieve pain, reduce swelling and speed up recovery. Seek medical help if the injury seems serious. Once you’ve recovered, take care to warm up before exercising, and be realistic about your physical prowess: many injuries happen because weekend warriors overestimate their level of fitness.
  • When the athlete is young, injury prevention is the key to healthy competition. Because they are still growing, children can be more prone to injury than adults. Before your child or teenager begins to play a sport, make sure he or she is ready both physically and mentally for the challenges involved in the game. Pay attention to the level of supervision and training offered by the coaches and staff, and don’t cut corners when it comes to protective gear. Protect your children from injury as much as possible, and encourage them to speak up if something is wrong. While you want them to be strong competitors, they need to learn to listen to bodily cues that indicate a real problem. For instance, symptoms like dizziness, memory loss and fatigue are serious indications of head injury and should never be ignored.
